PLAYING THE WAITING GAME...
Splitters, connectors and 10db couplers
even telecom engineers were oblivious of...Maybe because they were just random terms
out of many 1000 words used by the prof!!
But they were a part of Capital Work-in-Progress
which was putting a telecom company in a spot
And in that company, sat a commerce grad...
wondering over stuff he was never taught!!
Do the couplers prove the coupling theory??
and what are the splitters supposed to split?
One thing he was totally sure of...for this training, he wasn't the perfect fit!!
He spent his days at the sites
and dusty warehouse was where he went...
studied the IBS and the GBT
and on reading the Systra, his time was spent!
This onsite-offsite worked out well
got a fair idea of what was to be done...
with holding period and WACC worked out
the outcome was no less than a blazing gun!
Churned out excels, word docs and PPTs
to substantiate with numbers, all those complications...
the fact remains, the MBAs know just one thing
with MS Office at their tips, to make fancy presentations!
Seems like all went well for him...
Easier said than done, I'd say
He met 20 different people but one thing in common
"I'll be back in 5, sorry but just stay"
Should have expected this as a trainee
to be honest, no one was to blame...
sitting in the cubicle, and tired of it
he had no choice, but to play the waiting game!!
NOTES:
IBS: In-Building Solution. network put up in big malls, offices and hotels
GBT: Ground-based Tower. Put up from the ground, rather than the roof of a building.
Systra: 400 page document from Nokia explaining its equipment and how GSM works etc!!WACC: Hope u kno it already... Weighted Average Cost of Capital
BF:Full form Left to ur Interpretation
this blog caters to all the events happening to and fro BF hostel and gaurav's home: Life Beyond IIFT Kolkata

Wanna kill Roland Joffe??
Life in IIFT Kolkata!!...well, where should I start from? Okay, first about Kolkata. Ever wondered who is Roland Joffe? He is one person you would like to kill in your first 30 days in the city. Yes, he is the Director of the film City of Joy. And why would you like kill him? Obviously, you would find no joy in the city. How could he think of branding Kolkata as city of joy? Frankly speaking, for a person who has never been to Kolkata before, the city will be no less than hell. Food problem, water problem and moreover those taxi and auto wallahs shouting and arguing over nothing! Yes people, get ready to face the reality. It’s not at all easy to survive here.
But then days become weeks and weeks become months and then you realize your trimester is over. By then I can assure you, your hate towards the city will be far gone. Now you would be dazed and confused over whether you like the city or not. And for me, the confusion persists till date….
Now IIFT is a place where you will find solace. You make friends, you party out, and you crib over all the small things you thought were never worth attention. And then, exams happen. All of a sudden, there is a rush of things; not only adrenaline, but also presentations, projects, deadlines to be met and end-terms to be prepared for. This is where the real learning happens. Managerial qualities will not be tested from those bookish definitions; they will be tested in the last 10 days of each trimester. IIFT will make sure you work harder in those 10 days than previous 60 days. DGPs will be the best source of threat and they will have an effect. Burden of work is bound to take a toll. All those people with a “I don’t care about CGPA” attitude will be seen making notes and understanding economic graphs. After all, you don’t want to be the same person after 2 years of MBA. You want to be different, that’s why you are here. And believe me; IIFT will make sure you are different, in a better way, for a better life.

Life@IIFTK
“The apple cannot be stuck back on the Tree of Knowledge; once we begin to see, we are doomed and challenged to seek the strength to see more, not less.”
Arthur Miller
Arthur Miller
Fifty Two young people with dreams in their eyes to succeed and the courage to achieve their dreams, set on roll for their 2 years of challenging yet very interesting phase of life at IIFT, on 2nd of July 2007. With the majority of peers being engineers, I was determined to carve out a niche for myself too. We started getting along with each other through PDP sessions and the group assignments, projects, etc…. that part of life was called “Getting Accustomed To IIFT”.
At that point of time I had no clue what is in store for the coming 2 years. But day by day, month by month and now I can say even semester by semester, life has now become inseparable with IIFT. One of the advantages which I felt was the awesome enthusiasm in our batch towards the various activities which we got involved in, be it the Symposiums, or the parties, or the pujas (especially Saraswati Puja). Our small batch has been a very close knitted one ……and this part of life is called “Being a part of the IIFT family”.
Then came one of the bigger events: Summer Internship Program selections, which saw us pass through rounds of interviews and group discussions. Again we had all geared up by preparing ourselves through mock interviews and group discussions among ourselves. I enjoyed the 15 day stay at the Delhi Campus; especially being in the Atrium was really special. As all of us were through with the selections of summers, it came up as a great opportunity to make a small trip of northern part of the country along with IIFT friends -Praveen and Robin…..that part of life is known as “Living with Iiftians”.
From mid October i.e. 2nd semester thru 3rd semester in March, is the time when majorly all b-schools have their events and I got an opportunity to display my skills in presentations and reports at some of the best b-schools in India jointly with Diptangshu, who by far was ‘One of the best partners in Prime case study presentations’. This was the best part in terms of learning outside the classrooms. My main aim was to represent my college at different b-schools, and make the presence of our new Kolkata campus felt to all….this part of life is called “Presenting the IIFT way!”
One of the experience which stands out is that of elections for various club coordinators posts. Fortunately I was able to convince my peers for the post of Finance Club Coordinator but standing at the podium and answering questions for around an hour was no joke, and has definitely gave a boost to my confidence. With SIP starting now, everyone is focussed on their projects assigned to them. However I am too eager to listen to the various experiences which will bring the actual flavour of Corporate Life to our studies (as our professor Gautam Dutta would put in his words) this part of life is called “Flavour of IIFT”.
Now I seek more opportunities where I can focus on and specialize in, so that I can be an expert in the field of Finance. Life at IIFT Kolkata Campus has taught me to look further and further, understanding my scope, and always thriving to increasing it. Now with the 2nd half of my MBA at IIFT, I want to gear up myself and make everyone proud of me, my college in what will be called as….“Life after IIFT”.

Zindagi
hawaon mein kuch to baat hai,
jo dil mein aaj kwahishon ki baraat hai.
umar rahi hai hasrate hazar,
saaja de duniya pe na mitne wali bahar
choo le hum asmaan aaur baadal ko,
le aaye hum samundar ke gehrai se, anjaan sab motio ( Pearls) ko..
ya fir apni bhatakti zindagi ko koi maine de,
jiye hai apne liye, ab rang bhare hum dusro ke zindagi me,
nazuuk kalion ke muskan se,nanhe haatho ke taliyon se
budhe kaapte haatho ke ashirwad se
kamzor aankho me jaagti asha se
banaye hum nayi duniya, sajay ek nayi zindagi

I Hope ........
I hope it was cold out in Kolkata here
i am rising competitors beware :
I hope for me there will be more than just Lehman's
people will start understanding the language of the humans:
I hope i can make myself famous in this mysterious world
Make money not only in equity and debt but also in gold:
I hope to meet Deepika ( padukone ) a day
how big a fan am i can say:
I hope never to lose hope
I wish to live fullest and not just to cope:
I hope i become an Extrovert someday
To have a lot of friends to celebrate on my bday:
I dont wish to hope nemore
Coz i will be perfectionist ppl will chore:
Looking down the line 10 years from now
I want to see myself more eager to grow:
Now i will try to understand more people
"Coz relationships matter" says the Holy Bible:

The Starbucks Experience by Joseph A. Michelli
Can u believe it?.....If you had invested $10,000 in the Starbucks IPO on the NASDAQ in 1992, your investment would be worth approx. $ 6,50,000 today.....staggering 5000 % growth....
"The Starbucks Experience "by Joseph Michelli examines the working of a company that has taken an ordinary product and transformed into an extraordinary business success. It shares 5 principles that led to Starbucks being one of the world's "most admired" companies according to Fortune magazine. These priciples are
1) Make it your own
2) Everything matters
3)Surprise and Delight
4)Embrace Resistance
5) Leave your mark
The book attributes the success of Starbucks to its employees- the "partners" and the experience they create for each customer.......
The company which opened its first store in Seattle, Washington in 1971 has grown by leaps and bounds since then and has 11,000 stores in 37 countries ,averages more than 35 million customers visits each week and has loyal customers who visit it 18 times a month........
The book also shares the vision of Howard Schultz, the Starbucks former CEO and current Chairman....When people come to Starbucks, they should get a comfortable setting where they are valued on a personal level and where a meaningful emotional connection is made.....This setting referred to as "Third World" by Starbucks must offer warmth and relief that sets it apart from th first two places in most people's lives : work and home....
Customers must be able to customize their beverage with the handcrafted assitance of their barista(the Italian word for bartender and the term used at Starbucks for a coffee preparer).....
I found the book very enriching and engrossing.....I recommend it as a "must read" for all the budding "Marketing Managers'

So how do I do that...??
Now sometime back... there was a question: How do u do that??
So i would reveal how do I do that.
I saw her for the first time when i came to IIFT-K. Before that i could only dream about her. I thought about her when i saw her profile on the internet and used to go thru it a lot....but she was outta my reach.
Now coming to the point, I usually bring her home with me...without the caretaker knowing. I lay her on the bed and admire her beauty. Believe me, she's awesome. Every time im with her, i get to know more about her.
I generally start from behind...i like it that way, though her front is equally good with upper half usually the best. And when i touch her...she starts making noises i cant explain here. I twist her and turn her. Then slowly and slowly i go beyond..in the depth!....till i get what i really want...till i get tired of doing it everyday...till i have nothing more exciting to do....or till i reach the front page.
&*@%$*&@^......front page???
What?? I was talking about how i first got hold of Financial Times and how i read it!!!!
What were u thinkin of???
